Stifter inducted to the Hall of Fame

“Wrestling families are a special group of coaches, wrestlers, families and friends in communities that have high school
wrestling.” This was heard time and time again as 11 individuals from throughout Minnesota were recognized at the recent National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Minnesota
Chapter. Aitkin’s Dan Stifter was inducted at a banquet and ceremony in Austin. Over 30 family members and friends of the Stifters were in attendance to honor and
support Dan in earning his spot in an exclusive group of past wrestlers and supporters.
The Minnesota Chapter began in 2003 and continues. Anywhere from eight to a dozen inductees have received a plaque and coveted green jacket emblazened with “Lifetime
Service to Wrestling— Minnesota” and their name. The jackets must be earned and cannot be purchased. Stifter’s acceptance speech included remembering
high school wrestling in Winsted Holy Trinity followed by three years at the University of Minnesota. He acknowledged his mentors throughout wrestling
and then through beginning years of coaching.
Through the years, he, in turn, has been a mentor to younger coaches and referees. He acknowledged the family of Noel Bailey who “so graciously
accepted his family into the community.” Noel’s son and daughter, Lance and Dawn, were in attendance. Noel was inducted to the Hall of Fame in
2011. Remembrances of some humorous events brought chuckles from Aitkin fans as well as others. All coaches and referees acknowledged the importance
of their own families for their support in all the evenings spent at matches or waiting at home. Dan and high school sweetheart Karen have been
married 37 years.
