On the Headwaters of the Mississippi, Aitkin County has the most miles of the Mississippi River in Minnesota (100.11 river miles—more than the entire state of Kentucky!)—so it is no surprise that the county features a variety of river trails and paddling routes, including a section of the Mississippi River State Water Trail. Overall, there are more than 100 miles of river trails along calm and scenic shorelines that allow paddlers to explore the Aitkin County wilderness. For those wanting to stay closer to town, five miles of the Ripple River twist and wind within Aitkin city limits.
