Aitkin launches dedicated website on facilities planning
From Aitkin Independent- 1/22/2025
Aitkin Public Schools has launched a dedicated website, WeAreAitkin.org, to provide district residents with information
and updates on its facilities planning project. “Our goal is to have a one-stop shop for information as we continue working
closely with our staff and community to shape the future of Aitkin Public Schools,” said Superintendent Dan Stifter. “This
website will offer easy access to resources, updates and opportunities for engagement. “
Outdated infrastructure and limited space in school facilities no longer meet the needs of students, staff and the community.
In 2024, the Aitkin School Board initiated a long-term facilities planning process to address these challenges and plan for the future.
As part of this process, the district assessed the current condition of its facilities, evaluated projected enrollment and
reviewed educational and safety standards. It also held 14 stakeholder listening sessions and conducted an online survey with the
broader community. The process identified critical facility challenges, such as outdated and inefficient heating, ventilation
and air conditioning systems, deteriorating roofs, undersized classrooms, safety and security and a need to upgrade the high school auditorium
and add gymnasium space.
Residents also highlighted the potential of having all schools on one campus as a priority. “Our community has provided valuable input
into our facilities planning process. They understand our challenges and want a plan to address them,” Stifter said. “Our school board is working
hard to develop a thoughtful, cost-effective plan to enhance our facilities and serve our students, staff and community for decades.”
In the coming months, the school board will evaluate and prioritize facilities’ needs and consider various options to address them. Residents will also
have opportunities to learn more about these options and provide feedback as part of the ongoing planning process.
Residents are encouraged to visit WeAreAitkin.org to stay informed and submit questions or input through the “Connect Form” on the website.
