Aitkin County continues to promote economic development through recreation and tourism

Aitkin County continues to promote economic development through recreation and tourism. Residents and visitors alike will be pleased to see the latest innovative tool the County has developed to share our story: it is Naturally Better here in Aitkin County.

Thanks to funding from a Blandin Foundation Economic Development Boost grant, Aitkin County has branded a car with the Naturally Better logo. “We used an existing motor pool vehicle and wrapped it to highlight the recreational uniqueness of Aitkin County,” said Mark Jeffers, Economic Development Director. Importantly, no county tax dollars were used to create this “mobile billboard.” Depending on which side of the vehicle you see, you will be reminded of our excellent family fishing, ATV riding, and kayaking opportunities.

The economic development strategic plan includes six priorities:

    1. Business retention, expansion, and attraction
    2. Support for career and workforce development
    3. Promotion of recreation and tourism
    4. Improvement of broadband
    5. Support for childcare initiatives
    6. Support for housing initiatives

Promoting recreation and tourism for economic growth is one tool in the toolbox that highlights Aitkin County’s unique character, telling the story that it’s Naturally Better here. As we work to attract additional businesses, our recreational assets demonstrate that we are a safe, rural, and vibrant community where residents enjoy endless outdoor activities.

Recreational assets in a small community can significantly contribute to economic development through several interrelated mechanisms:

      1. Recreation Seeker Attraction: High-quality recreational facilities such as parks, trails, lakes, and sports complexes attract recreation seekers. These visitors spend money on local accommodations, food, retail, and entertainment, boosting the local economy.
      2. Quality of Life Improvement: Recreational assets enhance the quality of life for residents, making the community a more desirable place to live. This can attract new residents, including skilled workers and professionals who contribute to the local economy.
      3. Health Benefits: Access to recreational facilities promotes a healthier population, which can reduce healthcare costs and increase productivity due to fewer sick days and a more active workforce.
      4. Real Estate Value: Proximity to recreational assets such as parks, trails and lakes makes neighborhoods more desirable places to live. When businesses expand in such areas, it further enhances the appeal of the location. New restaurants, shops, and services make the area more convenient and enjoyable, adding to its attractiveness for potential residents and investors.   This spurs economic growth and contributes to a diverse and stable tax base.  With a broader tax base, municipalities may have the financial flexibility to lower the tax rates for property owners, reducing their overall tax burden while maintaining or even improving public services.
      5. Business Attraction and Retention: Companies often consider the availability of recreational amenities when deciding where to locate or expand. A vibrant community with robust recreational options can attract new businesses of all types and help retain existing ones.
      6. Event Hosting: Recreational facilities can host events such as sports tournaments, concerts, and festivals, bringing in visitors and revenue. These events also provide opportunities for local businesses to increase sales.
      7. Community Cohesion and Social Capital: Recreational spaces provide venues for social interaction, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Strong social networks can enhance economic resilience and innovation.
      8. Employment Opportunities: The tourism industry can spark quality year-round jobs by creating a demand for various goods and services beyond those directly related to tourism.  The development and maintenance of recreational assets create jobs in construction, landscaping, management, and services. Additionally, tourism contributes to a diverse economy that can attract families and business alike leading to a cycle of economic growth and job growth.
      9. Environmental Sustainability: Properly managed recreational assets can promote environmental sustainability, preserving natural resources that are vital for long-term economic health.

Recreational assets serve as a catalyst for economic development by attracting visitors, enhancing resident well-being, increasing property values, supporting local businesses, fostering community ties, and creating jobs. These benefits can collectively lead to a more vibrant and sustainable local economy. Potential businesses may invest in our area, housing, and community, ultimately expanding the tax base.

Aitkin County embraces tourism as a tool for sustainable growth. We are committed to preserving our small-town charm, one stop light and ensuring our community remains safe, vibrant, and welcoming for all residents. We cherish our unique identity, distinct from metropolitan areas, and pride ourselves on being naturally better.
