AARP free tax assistance available
From Aitkin Independent 1/22/2025
The AARP Tax-Aide program for low to moderate income taxpayers will be open by appointment only at the Aitkin Public Library beginning Thursday,
Feb. 13 and be open every Thursday until April 10 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Those wanting assistance must bring social security cards for taxpayers
and dependents, picture identification, all tax return information in printed form and last year’s tax return. For married filing joint returns, both taxpayers
must be present to sign the return. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers are not trained in all areas of income taxes. Some people may be advised to see a
paid preparer if the return is out of scope or too time consuming.
Volunteers will also be available at the following times and locations:
• McGregor Public
Library, Tuesday, March 18 and 25 and Tuesday, April 9 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
• Waukenabo Community Center, Wednesday, April 2 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
AARP is offering a new program for the second year called Facilitated Self Assistance (FSA). Taxpayers familiar with using a computer can use a
Chromebook provided by AARP and do their own taxes on a Taxslayer program with AARP counselors present to assist the taxpayer with tax law questions
and program software assistance. AARP will be open for FSA appointments on Saturday, March 15 and Saturday, April 12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Taxpayers may call 218-670-5588 beginning the last week of January for more information and to leave a name and phone number to be called for an
appointment for all locations
